Cambodia Tries to Reassure Vietnam That Proposed Canal Won't Affect Mekong River

13 Dec 2023  |  www.voacambodia.com
Cambodia is addressing Vietnam's concerns over a Chinese-funded canal project connecting the Gulf of Thailand with Mekong River tributaries. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet reassured Vietnam that the project would not negatively impact the Mekong's flow or the environment. The $1.7 billion Funan Techo Canal, part of China's Belt and Road Initiative, aims to enhance trade and improve livelihoods along its route. Despite regional cooperation agreements, Cambodia argues the project is exempt from requiring permission from neighboring countries. Environmental impact studies claim no adverse effects, and construction is set to begin in 2024.

Hun Sen’s Cambodian People’s Party Claims Landslide Victory in Uncontested Election

23 Jul 2023  |  www.voacambodia.com
The Cambodian People's Party (CPP), led by Prime Minister Hun Sen, claims a landslide victory in an uncontested general election, securing nearly all 125 parliamentary seats. The main opposition, the Candlelight Party, was disqualified from participating, leading to criticisms of the election's fairness. Voter turnout was reported at 84%, with around 300,000 spoiled ballots. Hun Sen hinted at transferring power to his son, Hun Manet, soon. Critics, including exiled opposition leader Sam Rainsy, condemned the election process as lacking credibility and democracy.

Cambodian Government Blocks News Sites Before Unopposed Election

12 Jul 2023  |  www.voanews.com
The Cambodian government has ordered ISPs to block websites and social media accounts of several news outlets, including Cambodia Daily Khmer and Radio Free Asia, just before the national election on July 23. The move, justified by the government as necessary to prevent confusion and protect its honor, has been widely condemned as an attempt to censor free information flow. This action follows a history of press freedom restrictions in Cambodia, including the closure of major media outlets and revocation of radio licenses. Critics argue that the blocking of these sites undermines the public's right to information and press freedom.

Cambodian Government Blocks News Sites Before Unopposed Election

12 Jul 2023  |  www.voacambodia.com
The Cambodian government has ordered ISPs to block websites and social media accounts of several news outlets, including Cambodia Daily Khmer and Radio Free Asia, just before the national election on July 23. The Telecommunications Regulator of Cambodia issued the order, citing concerns about the outlets' impact on the government's honor and prestige. The move has been condemned by various media organizations and is seen as a further restriction on press freedom in Cambodia, which ranks low on the World Press Freedom index. This action follows a history of media suppression in the country, particularly around election times.

Cambodia’s Main Opposition Party Disqualified from July’s National Election

15 May 2023  |  www.voacambodia.com
Cambodia's National Election Committee disqualified the main opposition Candlelight Party from the upcoming July national election, citing a lack of paperwork. This decision has been criticized by independent election groups, opposition leaders, and the European Union as undermining democratic processes. The ruling Cambodian People’s Party, led by Prime Minister Hun Sen, currently holds all parliamentary seats. The Candlelight Party plans to appeal the decision, arguing that it participated in previous elections without the disputed document. The disqualification has raised concerns about the legitimacy of the election and the suppression of political opposition in Cambodia.

Halting Recovery of Cambodia’s Real Estate Sector Risks Credit Shortage

10 May 2023  |  www.voacambodia.com
The recovery of Cambodia's real estate sector, heavily impacted by the pandemic, faces significant risks due to rising borrowing costs and global financial challenges. Government officials and the World Bank have warned of potential financing problems and credit shortages, which could affect the broader economy. Despite some local firms maintaining a positive outlook, the sector remains vulnerable, with many projects stalled and property prices declining. The World Bank highlights the risk of a market correction and its potential impact on Cambodia's banking sector. The situation in Sihanoukville serves as a cautionary tale, with numerous unfinished buildings and a need for government intervention to revive the market.

Cambodian Youth Petition Government to Reinstate Broadcaster

10 Apr 2023  |  voacambodia.com
Young Cambodians and youth organizations are petitioning the Ministry of Information to reinstate the independent media outlet Voice of Democracy, which was shut down by Prime Minister Hun Sen for its coverage of Cambodian aid to Turkey. The closure has been criticized for leaving a void in reliable independent news sources in Cambodia, especially with national elections approaching on July 23. The petition emphasizes the importance of independent media for a free and fair election process and cites the Cambodia Press Law, suggesting less severe measures than revocation of the license. Despite the broadcaster's attempts to rectify the situation, the government has defended its actions. The European Parliament and the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights have called for the restoration of civil liberties and media freedom in Cambodia, which ranks low on the World Press Freedom index.

Journalists Face Obstructions at International Events in Cambodia and Indonesia

16 Nov 2022  |  Voice of America
Journalists from ABC News and Cambodian media outlets VOA and VOD faced obstructions while covering international events in Cambodia and Indonesia. An ABC News producer was pushed by an unidentified person, believed to be part of the Chinese delegation, when she attempted to ask President Joe Biden a question during his meeting with China's leader Xi Jinping in Indonesia. Meanwhile, VOA and VOD journalists were denied access to a press conference by Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen at the ASEAN summit. Media associations in Cambodia have called for an explanation for this discrimination. The Cambodian Information Ministry stated that VOA and VOD were blocked because they do not broadcast the prime minister's speeches in full, which allegedly causes confusion.
