Early changes in cerebral metabolism after perinatal hypoxia-ischemia: a study in normothermic and hypothermic piglets

12 Apr 2024  |  www.frontiersin.org
The study investigates the early changes in cerebral metabolism after perinatal hypoxia-ischemia (HI) in piglets, comparing normothermic conditions with therapeutic hypothermia (TH) treatment. It was found that normothermic piglets showed a progressive secondary deterioration with an increase in markers of cell lysis, such as glycerol, while intracerebral blood flow, pressure, and oxygenation remained unaffected during this secondary increase. Therapeutic hypothermia appeared to prevent the secondary increase in glycerol concentration and resulted in lower intracerebral pressure, glucose accumulation, and lower levels of extracellular lactate. The study suggests that TH may have neuroprotective effects by interfering with pathophysiological mechanisms of HI and could potentially extend the window for other neuroprotective interventions.

First wave COVID-19 pandemic in Senegal: Epidemiological and clinical characteristics

10 Apr 2024  |  journals.plos.org
The study provides a descriptive analysis of the COVID-19 pandemic in Senegal from March 2 to October 31, 2020. The study found that all regions in Senegal were affected, with Dakar being the epicenter. Risk factors for infection included age, occupation, and comorbidities, with traders being highly exposed. Men, older age groups, and those with comorbidities like hypertension and cardiovascular diseases had higher mortality rates. The study also estimated the reproduction number and the effectiveness of public health interventions, suggesting that early measures helped to keep the reproduction number relatively low compared to other countries.
