Introduction

The Boko Haram conflict in Northeast Nigeria has not only resulted in devastating loss of lives and mass displacement of communities but has also posed a significant threat to the region's rich cultural heritage and diverse languages. Over the past decade, there have been serious violent and discriminate attacks on cultural monuments and sites in rural communities besieged by the nonstate actors and fights between them and the state actors. On the other side, as a result of the mass displacement, many small group communities and minority tribes have lost their traditions and languages due to the relocation to other places dominated by majority groups. Classical example of cultural sites the armed conflict has pushed to the brink of extinction is Rabeh’s Fort in Dikwa Local Government Area in Borno State. Also, multiple languages in Gwoza are already on the brink of extinction because of the mass killing and destruction of their villages. There is also loss of traditional practices like the Fulani annual Fidgo are no longer practiced because they have been displaced in the urban area. As the conflict persists, there is an urgent need to document, preserve, and revitalize the cultural traditions and languages of Borno State before they are lost forever. This video documentary proposal aims to shed light on the impact of the conflict on cultural heritage and languages in Borno and propose strategies for their preservation and revitalisation from the perspective of the experts and activists to be featured in the documentary.
