GIS impounds caravan with 'Kufuor gallons' of diesel

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) at Akanu in the Volta region seized a caravan carrying about 150 'Kufuor gallons' of diesel, suspected to be stolen from Libya and smuggled into West Africa. The caravan, with a Nigerian registration, was intercepted early on Saturday by GIS officers. The smuggled diesel, cheaper than the national price, was transported through Togo into Ghana via unapproved routes. The GIS is intensifying patrols and calls for cooperation among security agencies to combat smuggling and protect the country's economy and security. The seized items will be handed over to the Customs Division.

German NGO and Ketu South Hospital restore lives of mentally challenged in Volta

The German NGO 'On The Move e.V.' in collaboration with Ketu South Municipal Hospital (KSMH) in Ghana's Volta region has successfully rehabilitated ten mentally challenged individuals since 2016. The NGO has been supporting healthcare projects in the Ketu South District for over six years and has partnered with KSMH since 2015. Together, they have conducted educational activities on brain awareness and established the 'Home of Brains' centre for psychiatric rehabilitation last year. The centre has provided social, emotional, and vocational training to patients. Although four patients could not complete the program, the ten who did are now working in their communities. A meeting with local religious and traditional leaders was held to discuss a holistic approach to mental health and to seek support for the initiative.

GIS collaborates with Customs Division to tighten security in Volta Region

The Volta Regional Commander of the Ghana Immigration Service, Peter Nantuo Esq, has initiated efforts to strengthen collaboration with other security agencies, including the Customs Division, to secure Ghana's borders in response to the threat of terrorism from neighboring countries like Burkina Faso. The commander and his team visited various border points, such as Nyive, to discuss strategies with both the Customs Exercise and Preventive Service and the Immigration Service. The focus is on preventing terrorist infiltration, tackling illegal activities, and fostering better relationships with border communities to gather intelligence and ensure national safety.

Alavanyo Shooting Victims Appeal for Aid

Victims of the January 13 shooting in Alavanyo, Volta Region, are seeking aid after a violent incident involving a joint Police-Military force and residents left three dead and several injured. Two victims, Nutifafa Etordzor and Yevu Victor, are currently receiving medical treatment at St. Marquette Hospital. Etordzor had his leg amputated, while Victor suffered injuries that may affect his manhood. Both expressed disappointment in the government's lack of support. The hospital administrator highlighted the need for financial assistance for the victims, as some treatments are not covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). Four other victims with less severe injuries have been discharged but are also dissatisfied with the handling of the incident by REGSEC. The community continues to mourn the deceased, and there is a call for further investigation and public support.

Volta Region inaugurates modern Press Centre

Ghana pledges support to end Morocco-Western Sahara dispute

The conflict dates back to when Spain colonized Western Sahara, leading to a ceasefire agreement in 1991 between Morocco and the Polisario Front. Ghanaian farmer wrongfully jailed in Togo freed

Prosper Kweku Amexo, a 40-year-old Ghanaian farmer, was wrongfully imprisoned in Togo for allegedly stealing cola nuts and has been released after four months without trial. He was arrested on November 30, 2018, and was detained in Kloto Central Prisons. His family sought help from the Ho West District Chief Executive, Ernest Apawu, who, along with the Ghana Embassy in Togo, facilitated Prosper's release. Prosper returned home on February 23, 2019, in poor health, and his family expressed gratitude to all who assisted in his release. The intervention led to a trial where Prosper was found not guilty and subsequently released.

Volta Region: Chonke Chief Appeals for Motorable Roads

The Chonke Traditional Area in the Krachi Ntumuru District of Ghana's Volta Region is facing severe infrastructure challenges, with deteriorating roads leading to post-harvest losses for farmers. Paramount Chief Daasebre Kwame Bonja II has appealed to President Nana Akufo Addo to continue road projects abandoned after the previous government's departure. The area also lacks potable water, electricity, and adequate healthcare facilities. The Minister for Inner Cities and Zongo Development, Abubakari Sadiq Boniface, assured that the government would consider their pleas.
