The dubious ecological turn of the nationalist party in North Macedonia
The Democratic Union for Integration (DUI) in North Macedonia has announced a shift towards an ecological agenda, marking a significant change from its previous ethnic-based policies. This move, announced by leader Ali Ahmeti, has been met with skepticism from political analysts and environmental organizations, who question the sincerity of the DUI's commitment to environmental issues. Critics highlight the party's poor track record in environmental management since holding the Ministry of Environment since 2008. The shift is seen by some as a strategic move ahead of local elections. The ruling party SDSM has welcomed the change, while opposition parties have criticized it as a public relations stunt.
North Macedonia lags behind in recycling
North Macedonia faces significant challenges in waste management, with extremely low recycling rates despite increasing waste generation. The legal framework aligns with EU standards, but poor implementation at the municipal level hampers progress. The city of Prilep stands out as a positive example, significantly contributing to waste selection and recycling. Experts and activists call for better infrastructure, public awareness, and state involvement to improve the situation. Missed national targets and environmental research highlight the urgent need for effective waste management strategies to address pollution and health issues.
North Macedonia's Plan to Expand Its Protected Areas
In 2021, the North Macedonian government plans to adopt new measures to protect the country's mountainous areas, aiming to combat climate change and social imbalances. The Šar Mountain, Osogovo, and Vodno near Skopje are set to receive protected status, increasing the nation's protected land from 9% to 12%. Environmental organizations are concerned about the impact of small hydroelectric plants and illegal logging on these regions. The government’s decision follows a long campaign by environmental groups, particularly regarding the construction of a gas distribution network through Vodno.
North Macedonia could reach herd immunity even before vaccinating
North Macedonia is facing delays in its COVID-19 vaccination campaign due to a shortage of vaccines, with only healthcare workers currently being vaccinated. Some journalists have traveled to Serbia to receive the AstraZeneca vaccine. The country has received vaccine donations from Serbia and purchased vaccines from Russia, but mass vaccination is yet to begin. An immunity study suggests that a significant portion of the population may already have immunity, raising questions about achieving herd immunity before widespread vaccination. The COVAX mechanism is expected to provide vaccines soon, with AstraZeneca likely to be the first to arrive.
The two souls of North Macedonia united by a passion for bees and honey
In Tetovo, North Macedonia, Driton Dikena and Vladimir Petrovski, from different ethnic and religious backgrounds, collaborate through their beekeeping association to promote interethnic cooperation. They organize events like the Tetovo Honey Awards and Sweet Days of Tetovo, emphasizing community and environmental contributions. Their work transcends ethnic divisions, focusing on shared goals and the love for bees. They also aim to involve more women in beekeeping through initiatives like natural honey-based cosmetics. Their efforts contribute to cleaner air and foster unity in a politically divided region.
In Macedonia del Nord non è così facile fare il censimento
North Macedonia faces challenges in conducting its 2021 census due to past failures and current socio-political issues. The 2011 census was aborted due to disagreements among enumerators, and the 2020 census was postponed due to elections and the pandemic. The upcoming census will use a combined method with electronic questionnaires. Key concerns include the reliability of data for citizens abroad and the potential impact on ethnic rights, particularly for the Albanian community. The government insists the census is purely for statistical purposes and not for altering laws or the constitution.
