Portugal, which was initially commended for its handling of the coronavirus pandemic, has recently faced a severe surge in COVID-19 cases. The country has experienced the highest rates of new infections and deaths per capita over the past two weeks. This has led to a critical shortage of ICU beds, prompting the transfer of some patients to Madeira. The crisis has become so acute that Germany has sent doctors to assist Portugal in managing the overwhelming demand on its healthcare system.
