Newsprint prices in Europe have reached all-time highs due to extreme undersupply and rising production costs, particularly for gas. The graphic paper industry is at risk as small publishers and printers struggle with the increased costs. Capacity closures and production difficulties have led to a significant decrease in newsprint supply. European newsprint capacity decreased by almost one million tonnes per year, and total European newsprint shipments fell by 6.4% year on year in October. Price increases and energy surcharges have been implemented by several newsprint suppliers, with prices in the UK and continental Europe rising significantly. The lack of newsprint has limited buyers' negotiation power, and most market participants expect the price increases to negatively impact newsprint demand. Logistics problems and production issues are expected to continue causing a tight market. On the supply side, more newsprint capacity will be taken out in 2022, with several mills converting to recycled containerboard (RCCM) production.
