Two children killed in Nairobi laid to rest

31 Oct 2023  |  The Standard
In Nairobi's Mwiki estate, two children, Yvonne Njeri, seven, and her brother Mark Waiganjo, three, were allegedly killed by their mother, Mary Nduta, who then attempted suicide. The children were buried in Rubiru village, Murang'a County. The mother, under police custody, is expected to be arraigned in court. Speakers at the burial avoided discussing the circumstances of the deaths. The father, James Mwangi, and Nduta's father, Charles Murigi, expressed their grief, with Murigi mentioning his daughter's depression and requesting a thorough investigation. A friend of the family, Joseph Macharia, recounted the events leading to the discovery of the tragedy. Mwangi's brother, Paul Maina, spoke of family disputes that had been addressed by local authorities. The community is in shock over the incident.

The sewage area in Ruai that displaced persons call home

07 Oct 2016  |  The Standard
The article by Bernard Kimani discusses the harsh living conditions of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in a camp near the Ruai Sewage Treatment Plant in Kenya. The IDPs have been neglected by the government and have not received adequate assistance or food supplies. They resort to farming using water from the nearby rivers, despite it being unsafe. The Ministry of Special Programmes has been criticized for failing to register them in time for aid. The IDPs face numerous challenges, including crop destruction by wildlife and the high costs of farming. Personal stories from the camp residents, such as Mrs. Margret Wambui, highlight the struggles and the drastic change in their quality of life since the 2007 post-election clashes.

A video story-In Nairobi's Korogocho slum many women, especially the elderly, fall victim to rape. One single mother decided enough was enough and began to train herself in martial arts. Three years she now teaches elderly women in Korogocho the art of Karate and inspires them to learn how to defend themselves.
