Bonny Symons-Brown

Former ABC News journalist and Harvard Nieman fellow. My specialty is live breaking news. Previously based in Southeast Asia providing television and radio coverage to Paydesk clients including Deutsche Welle, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and CBS. Now based in Mexico City.

I reported and produced digital, radio and television news and current affairs for ABC before receiving the Nieman Foundation for Journalism's Atsuko Chiba fellowship in 2017-2018. I am passionate about journalism that moves the needle - whether by showcasing new voices or telling stories that encourage empathy and understanding in a sometimes fractured world.

JUNE 2019 I speak to ABC News about the drivers and dangers of migration from Central America to the US. This interview followed the drownings of Salvadoran Óscar Alberto Martínez Ramírez and his daughter Valeria in the Rio Grande as they were trying to enter Texas. I discuss the pressure President Donald Trump is applying to his Mexican counterpart, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and the migration policies of both countries.

MAY 2017 I report on the findings of a long-awaited inquest into the Lindt Cafe terrorist attack in Sydney. The 16-hour siege claimed the lives of two people, Tori Johnson and Katrina Dawson. The gunman was also killed. This story led Australia's most prominent radio bulletin and raised further questions about how police should approach hostage situations.
