IFRS Generates Authentic Accounting Snapshot for SMEs

21 Jun 2013  |  silo.tips

Compliance: lessons from HSBC

22 May 2013  |  BRIL Chamber
Roberto Bedrikow, an expert in Electronic Law, discussed the importance of effective compliance programs in banks to avoid convictions in money laundering and terrorism financing cases. He highlighted the lessons from the nearly $2 million fine imposed on HSBC in the United States in December for failing to maintain adequate information on clients, particularly from HSBC Mexico. The bank was unable to adequately monitor almost $2 trillion in transfers from 2006 to 2009, including over $150 million from HSBC Mexico. Bedrikow emphasized the need for strong technological elements and processes to handle such transactions and the importance of proving the effectiveness of compliance programs in court. He also noted the human factor, where HSBC failed to provide adequate training and resources for professionals to maintain an effective anti-money laundering program. The case underlines the high cost of non-compliance and the global nature of banking operations that require worldwide solutions.

In the trees, the history of the climate

05 Jun 2011  |  Estadão
The world's oldest trees are aiding in the understanding of the planet's climate. Research in Brazil and abroad has shown that monitoring tree species can reveal how they have adapted and will continue to adapt to climate change. This is possible because external traumas like fire, rain, and snow leave marks within the wood, known as growth rings. Gregório Ceccantini from the University of São Paulo explains that these rings provide information about the environmental conditions in which the tree grew. Dendrochronology, the science of studying tree age and its relationship with the environment, has revealed the age of the world's oldest known tree, the Currey Tree, at 4,955 years old in Nevada, USA. In Sweden, researchers Lisa Öberg and Leif Kullman from the University of Omea have found trees that have been reproducing asexually for 9,550 years. In Brazil, a USP team led by Ceccantini is researching two species of jatobá trees to reconstruct temperature and rainfall conditions over the past century. Jochen Schöngart's research in the Amazon has shown that growth rings in trees indicate that rain inhibited tree growth, while in the United States, fire had the opposite effect on sequoias. The article also mentions the Pando in the USA, a clonal colony of trees estimated to be 80,000 years old, and the Currey Tree, the oldest single-trunk tree.

About 400 homeless people sleep in the Historic Triangle of SP

29 Jul 2010  |  Estadão
Every night, around 400 people sleep on the streets within the Historic Triangle area of São Paulo, which comprises São Bento, XV de Novembro, and Direita streets. This count is conducted daily by the NGO Viva o Centro. Experts suggest that a stronger social safety net could prevent homelessness. The article discusses the challenges faced by homeless individuals, including the unattractiveness of shelters, the difficulty of leaving the streets, and the complexity of the shelter environment. It also touches on the need for better social programs and the issues related to drug and alcohol use among the homeless population. The Secretaria Municipal de Assistência e Desenvolvimento Social (SMADS) extends shelter hours during cold months and has a policy of not creating dependency. The article also notes the closure of some shelters and the increase in the homeless population in São Paulo over the past decade.

Only 23.5 km for 300,000 cyclists

26 Jul 2008  |  Estadão
São Paulo, a city heavily reliant on automobiles with a fleet of 6 million cars, has a mere 23.5 kilometers of bike lanes compared to other major cities, with the best bike paths located in parks. The street bike lanes are inoperative and in poor condition, offering no incentive for using bicycles as transportation. Despite nearly 300,000 people using bicycles to commute to work, the city faces a historical deficit in cycling infrastructure investment and institutional obstacles, as the issue is not addressed by the Municipal Transport Secretariat. Maurício Guimarães, president of the cyclists' NGO Rodas da Paz, suggests bicycles as a solution to the city's high pollution levels.

Bankers from Latin America and Europe denounce banks - Fetec

24 Nov 2004  |  www.fetecpr.org.br
Bankers from Latin America, Portugal, and Spain are denouncing the high profits of the financial system for increasing unemployment and poverty. They argue that banks are responsible for income concentration and the lack of job opportunities in the name of efficiency, contributing little to alleviate resource scarcity for infrastructure investment. International Days of Struggle are being organized to highlight the banks' weak social responsibility, with specific events targeting ABN Amro, Grupo Santander, and HSBC in Latin America and European countries. Workers' representatives at ABN Amro are proposing a Framework Agreement, while at Grupo Santander, bankers are denouncing significant profit transfers abroad, cost reductions, and constant layoffs. At HSBC, the formation of the International Union Coordinator of HSBC Bank is being announced, seeking dialogue for a Framework Agreement to promote labor understanding across countries. The poor economic development in Latin America is largely attributed to the banks' lack of social responsibility, and it is suggested that a portion of their profits could boost economic and social development in the region.
