Factors associated with higher alcohol concentrations in emergency department presentations: PACE study

04 Apr 2024  |  onlinelibrary.wiley.com
The study identifies demographic and clinical factors associated with higher acute and ongoing harmful alcohol concentrations in emergency department presentations. It found that younger patients, males, injury-related presentations, and those brought in by ambulance or involuntarily, were more likely to have higher blood ethanol concentrations. Higher phosphatidylethanol concentrations were identified for middle-aged males and in the days following the festive period. The study suggests the need for screening and assessment for harmful alcohol consumption, particularly post-festive periods, to inform patient-tailored interventions and resource allocation. Conducted at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in Queensland, Australia, the study used blood ethanol and phosphatidylethanol markers to measure alcohol intake in emergency department presentations.

Understanding compensable and non-compensable patient profiles, pathways and physical outcomes for transport and work-related injuries in Queensland, Australia through data linkage

01 Jan 2023  |  bmjopen.bmj.com
The study aims to evaluate the quality and value of linking Queensland's compulsory third-party motor vehicle accident claims data, workers’ compensation injury claims data, and health data to address stakeholder information needs. It will compare the health service use profiles, costs, treatment pathways, and physical outcome trajectories of compensable and non-compensable transport and work-related injured patients. The research will provide insights into the concordance and quality of data across health and compensation databases, and the health service utilization patterns for transport and work-related injury patients in Queensland. The study will also inform injury prevention policy and compensation scheme management by providing comprehensive data on injury severity, treatment, and outcomes.

Quantifying the hospitalised morbidity and mortality attributable to traumatic injury using a population-based matched cohort in Australia

01 Dec 2016  |  bmjopen.bmj.com
This study quantifies the 12-month hospitalised morbidity and mortality attributable to traumatic injury in Australia, using a population-based matched cohort of individuals aged 18 years and older. It controls for demographic factors and pre-existing comorbidities, finding that injured individuals have higher mortality and more than double the rate of hospital admissions in the 12 months post-injury compared to non-injured counterparts. Over half of post-injury hospitalisations are likely related to the index injury, with the attributable risk proportion decreasing with age. The study highlights the ongoing burden of care following injury and suggests that current Global Burden of Disease and Injury estimates may overestimate the impact of injury by not accounting for pre-injury comorbid conditions.
