Sawa Shabab: A Peacebuilding Radio Drama for South Sudanese Youth
Sawa Shabab is a peacebuilding radio drama series aimed at the youth of South Sudan. The series highlights the lives of four young characters - Rose, Taban, Winnie, and Richard - who navigate through challenges such as tribalism, poverty, gender inequity, and insecurity, while also dealing with universal youth issues like education, employment, relationships, and aspirations. The show portrays Rose's struggle against traditional values to become an actress, Winnie's efforts to reintegrate after returning from America, Taban's quest to support his family and find his father, and Richard's experience with unearned authority. As the series progresses, these characters evolve into peacebuilders within their communities. The drama is broadcast on Catholic Radio Network, Radio Miraya, and local stations, with additional content available on Facebook. It is produced by Free Voice in partnership with the US Institute of Peace.
South Sudanese Player Not Taken in NBA Draft
Peter Jok, a former University of Iowa basketball player, was not selected in the NBA draft but has joined the New Orleans Pelicans' summer league team. Jok, originally from South Sudan, has overcome a challenging past, including time in refugee camps and the loss of his father during Sudan's civil war. He excelled in basketball during his senior year at Iowa, averaging 19.9 points per game and winning a 3-point-shooting contest. Jok credits his mother for his work ethic and leadership skills. Despite not being drafted, he remains optimistic about his future in basketball and believes his shooting skills fit the NBA well.
