Uganda vaccinates front-line health operatives against Ebola
The World Health Organisation and the health ministry in Uganda have initiated a vaccination campaign against Ebola for frontline workers in five districts near the Democratic Republic of Congo. A total of 2,100 doses of the 'rVSV-Ebola' vaccine will be used to immunize health workers against the Zaire strain of the virus, which is currently present in parts of the DRC. The vaccine has shown positive results in the DRC and is being used under 'compassionate use' as it is not yet commercially licensed. The decision to vaccinate comes as a preventive measure in response to previous outbreaks where health workers succumbed to the virus. Uganda's Health Minister, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, has stated that this vaccination is a crucial component of the country's Ebola virus disease preparedness.

Court declares sale of liquor in estates illegal
Justice Chacha Mwita upheld a directive from Nacada, which prohibits the establishment of liquor outlets and nightclubs within 300 meters of learning institutions. The ruling was in response to an application by the Muimara Estate Residents Association against a local trader, Kariuki Kimiti, who had set up a bar close to a residential area with young and school-going children. The court's decision was based on Article 42 of the Kenyan Constitution, which ensures the right to a clean and healthy environment, and the judge noted that such establishments within residential areas would violate this right. The Nairobi county government was directed not to issue licenses for liquor operations within the estate.
DCI arrests two for repackaging expired wheat flour in Dandora
Two individuals, Joyce Nyambura and Samuel Kamau, were arrested by DCI detectives in Siranga, Dandora, Nairobi for repackaging expired wheat flour brands Exe, Dola, and Golden, which had expired in July. Concerns were raised about the possibility of some of this flour having been sold to the public. This incident is part of a larger crackdown on contraband and substandard goods in Kenya, which has seen the seizure of expired food items in Eldoret and over 50 tonnes of expired beans in an NCPB silo. Interior CS Fred Matiang'i has emphasized the government's commitment to continue the fight against illicit goods.
