Poor Women in Malawi Forced to Trade Sex for Fish

30 Sep 2019  |  www.voanews.com
In the Makawa area of Malawi, women facing hunger and food shortages are engaging in transactional sex with fishermen to obtain fish. Cecelia Iman, secretary of the Village Beach Committee, notes that this practice is common and leads to problems such as increased HIV prevalence and unplanned pregnancies. Laika Atibu, a local villager, refuses to participate due to the risk of HIV. Fisherman Yalid Nkhoma denies that fishermen use fish to exploit women. The issue is most prevalent from December to March when food shortages are severe. Community leaders have initiated economic empowerment programs for women to reduce dependency on fishermen.

Despite criticism about the camp's short duration, lecturers and the education minister praised its inspirational impact. Organizers plan to assess and monitor the campers' performance in their schools.

Charity Group Restores Malawi Smiles a Surgery at a Time

05 Jul 2019  |  www.voanews.com
Operation Smile, an international charity, is providing free corrective surgeries for Malawians with cleft lips and palates, a condition that has led to shame and discrimination. The charity has performed about 1,000 surgeries in Malawi over seven years, despite a shortage of local plastic surgeons. Agnes Chiotcha and James Rice, individuals who have benefited from the surgeries, express their relief and newfound confidence. Operation Smile is also working to train more local doctors to address the estimated 3,000 Malawians still affected by the condition.
