The small village of Ibey in the Kutu territory, upstream of Bandundu, has become famous for a new diamond mining operation, attracting around 6,000 people. The only access is by river, and the influx of people has led to overcrowding and severe hygiene issues, with most residents defecating in the river, which is also used for bathing, laundry, and cooking. While some can afford clean water, others cannot, and the local chief and health workers are concerned about the potential for an epidemic. A private individual has built a communal toilet and shower, but it's not enough to address the hygiene problems, and the provincial head of Mines has called for the Diamond Traders Association to create structures to manage hygiene, given their health depends on it.
