Tomana hits back at critics

22 Oct 2019  |  NewsDay Zimbabwe
Prosecutor-General Johannes Tomana has been criticized for his comments on child marriages, which were perceived as supportive of the practice. He claims his words were taken out of context and that he was merely explaining the law as it stands. Tomana emphasizes that his role is to enforce the law, not to question it. He has faced backlash from women's groups and legislators, with some calling for his removal by President Robert Mugabe. Tomana clarifies that he was highlighting the legal distinction between consensual sex with a minor and rape, and the different legal consequences that follow. He also comments on the societal issue of men preferring younger girls, which he finds problematic.
