Cameroonians Neglect Covid-19 Safety Precautions

15 Oct 2020  |  africanews.com
The article discusses the lax attitude of residents in major cities of Cameroon towards Covid-19 preventive measures such as social distancing and wearing face masks. Despite the government's efforts, including a mobile Covid-19 screening strategy termed 'Track, Test and Treat', and daily press briefings to update the public, many Cameroonians believe they are naturally immune to the virus. Prof Yap Boum, deputy head of Cameroon’s Public Health Emergency Research Centre, acknowledges the public's negligence due to the high recovery rate and low death rate. The reasons behind the high healing rate in Cameroon are still being investigated, with possibilities including boosted immunity, exposure to numerous tropical diseases, or the youthful demographic of the population.

Vanilla prices soar in Madagascar

23 Aug 2017  |  africanews.com
Madagascar, responsible for 80% of the world's vanilla production, is experiencing a surge in vanilla bean prices due to high demand. This has led to hoarding by dealers who aim to sell at higher prices later. The lucrative market has given rise to cartels and dishonest trading practices, as noted by vendor Patrick Razafiarivo. Prices have tripled in the past three years, now reaching around $600 per kilo. The vanilla industry has also seen an increase in crime and the sale of poor-quality products, as mentioned by exporter Lucia Salvetat. Despite Madagascar earning approximately $650 million from vanilla last year, representing 5% of its GDP, the wealth has not significantly improved the local economy, with only six out of eighty-six municipalities having access to electricity.
