Every third child in Berlin lives in poverty — meet one of them
In Berlin, one in three children relies on social welfare due to a significant level of income inequality, particularly affecting children of single parents. The Cabuwazi Circus, an inclusive social program, helps children from diverse backgrounds to learn acrobatics, teamwork, and overcome fears. Initiatives like this are crucial as poverty can lead to developmental disorders in children. The VR documentary 'Rise Above' by Felix Gaedtke & Gayatri Parameswaran, supported by Euronews and others, showcases these issues and the impact of solutions like the social circus.
Felix Gaedtke heads NowHere Media which is a storytelling studio based in Beriln.
Climate change: Arctic reindeer herders on thin ice
Sami reindeer herders in Norway's Finnmark region are facing challenges due to climate change, with the Arctic warming at a rate 2.5 times faster than the global average. This has led to less ice and increased precipitation, making it difficult for reindeer to access food. Traditional herding practices are being adapted, such as castrating more male reindeer to help the herd dig through hard snow. Land traditionally used for reindeer herding is also being lost to other industries, leading some younger Sami to pursue different careers. Despite these changes, the Sami community strives to maintain their cultural identity and traditional livelihoods.
Homestays for snow leopards in the Himalayas
The Snow Leopard Conservancy-India Trust (SLC-IT) works with villagers in the Himalayas to protect snow leopards and improve local livelihoods through the Himalayan Homestay program. Despite cultural hunting practices contributing to the decline of snow leopard populations, conservation efforts focus on coexistence and sustainability. However, not all communities, such as the village of Tar, benefit from these programs, facing losses from wildlife attacks and lacking support for homestays. The Forest Department has adopted similar conservation strategies, emphasizing the coexistence of humans and wildlife.
A day in the life of a Punjabi farmer in Georgia
Punjabi farmer Ramandeep Singh Palhan has been living in Georgia since 2012, attracted by cheap land prices and favorable farming conditions. He has purchased 300 hectares of land, which promises higher profits than farming in India. The Georgian government's decision to allow foreign agricultural professionals has caused discontent among local farmers. Palhan, who resides in Rustavi, experiences cultural differences and misses his family in Punjab, with whom he keeps in touch via email and Skype. The Punjabi community in Georgia gathers for weekly prayer meetings and plans to build a gurudwara. Dharamjit Singh Saini's agency, Crown Immigration Services, has facilitated the move of over 2,000 Punjabi farmers to Georgia and plans to open a language school in Punjab.
