A case study in São Paulo demonstrates the economic and environmental viability of generating electricity from food waste using a biogas-adapted generator. The project, conducted in a shopping centre, produced 1,368,750 m3 of biogas annually, reducing electricity consumption by 14% and achieving a profit of USD 3.087 million with a 433% ROI. The study highlights the potential of biogas as a renewable energy source, offering significant cost savings and environmental benefits, including reduced greenhouse gas emissions and organic waste recycling. The findings suggest that biogas production from food waste is a sustainable and economically viable energy solution.
