The ‘Unsmoke’ screen: the truth behind PMI’s cigarette-free future
The article discusses PMI's heated tobacco device, Iqos, which is seen as a middle ground between traditional cigarettes and e-cigarettes. Unlike vapes, Iqos uses real tobacco and heats it to release nicotine without burning it, supposedly reducing the intake of carcinogens. PMI's CEO, Calantzopoulos, who has transitioned from smoking to using Iqos himself, aims to convert 40 million smokers to PMI's alternative products by 2025. The article also touches on the economic reasons behind PMI's focus on heated tobacco products over e-cigarettes, such as adaptability of cigarette manufacturing processes and higher profit margins. Iqos has been successful in markets like Japan, South Korea, Russia, and Italy, contributing to declining cigarette sales.
