The Decadent Charm of Cosenza
Cosenza, a city of culture and history, is compared to Rome for its seven hills and equidistance from sea and mountains. It's home to philosophers like Bernardino Telesio and hosts cultural hubs like Centro Rat and Gaia. The old town, despite its decay, is a treasure of classicism, art, and archaeology. The Museo del fumetto celebrates illustrated narratives, and the untouched forest of the Sila's giants is a natural wonder. The article also describes various experiences, from art spaces to local cuisine, and ends with a visit to the Museo dei brettii e degli enotri, showcasing ancient relics, and the Gran caffè Renzelli, a taste of noble Cosenza.
In Africa, leprosy continues to kill
Leprosy continues to cause deaths in Africa, with over 20,000 cases across the continent, from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Tanzania. In the Manyoni district of Tanzania, the small village of Sukamahela has seen about 35 deaths in the last year, including 5 children. A small non-profit organization from Calabria, La Terra di Piero, founded by fans of Cosenza Calcio, has worked to improve conditions in a leprosarium there since last April.
Cosenza's Acquario Theatre triumphs at the Ubu Awards but is no longer funded by the Ministry. Moni Ovadia: 'Senseless choice'
The Acquario Theatre in Cosenza, founded by the Centro Rat cooperative, has won the prestigious Ubu Award for the first time in its 42-year history. Despite this recognition, the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities (Mibac) has excluded the theatre from funding for the 2018-2020 period, a decision made during the Gentiloni government. The external expert commission appointed by then-minister Franceschini gave the theatre a score below the threshold for funding. The theatre's administrative appeal is pending a decision by the Lazio Regional Administrative Tribunal (Tar). Moni Ovadia criticized the funding denial, highlighting the theatre's cultural significance. The theatre fears closure after 42 years if the situation does not change.
Italians in Hell, Inside an Occupied House in the Heart of Cosenza. The Squatters: 'It's No Life in 2017? Either This or the Street'
For over twenty years, the historic center of Cosenza, the city of philosopher and mathematician Bernardino Telesio, has been in a state of decay, with abandoned historic buildings, open-air dumps, and potholed streets. The situation is particularly dire in a building adjacent to the Cosenza Duomo, where two brothers live in precarious conditions, with access to their apartment via wooden beams over a precipice. Recent fires and collapses, such as the one on August 28 in the Santa Lucia district, continue to highlight the emergency.
Calabria Town Revived Thanks to Migrant Welcome Policy. Deputy Mayor of Democratic Party: 'Renzi? Helping them in our home made us richer'
Acquaformosa, a small town in Calabria, has experienced economic and social revival by welcoming migrants through the Sprar project funded by the Ministry of the Interior. Deputy Mayor Giovanni Manoccio of the Democratic Party, who is also the immigration delegate for the Presidency of the Region of Calabria, highlights the town's rise in wealth rankings from 380th to 210th according to Censis. This counters the narrative of invasion and contrasts with the views of Democratic Party leader Matteo Renzi, who advocates for helping migrants in their own countries.
Cosenza, travel ban to Minister Minniti. Protest at the University of Calabria against the Security bill
In Cosenza, at the University of Calabria, a protest by about a hundred activists from city movements took place against the presence of Interior Minister Marco Minniti. They were claiming the right to freedom of movement and expression in opposition to the Security bill co-signed by Minniti and Minister Andrea Orlando. A precarious lecturer attempted to symbolically deliver a travel ban to the minister during the event but was chased away by security.

Robots from Sapienza University Worked Among the Rubble to Provide Images to Firefighters
Robotic engineers from Sapienza University of Rome, participating in the European project Tradr, deployed drones and ground robots to monitor two churches in Amatrice, Italy, severely affected by an earthquake. They provided images to firefighters and law enforcement. High-resolution footage was showcased at Eurobotics Week 2016, which featured over 700 events across EU countries. Researchers also developed 'Nao' robots for the Robocup Soccer and a sensor system used in cinema for characters like Gollum from 'The Lord of the Rings' and movies like 'Avatar'.
From the PC that will quench Africa's thirst to robotic prostheses. In Rome, inventors network from the grassroots
The European Maker Fair in Rome showcased various inventions including 'Watly', a solar-powered computer designed to purify water in the Third World, and 'hands talking', robotic gloves to help the deaf and mute communicate. Other highlights included 'Ortunino', a portable garden for teaching children about nature, and 'Diana', a lamp that turns off with a breath, created by Milanese students. Massimo Banzi, co-founder of the Arduino hardware system, emphasized the event as an opportunity for innovators to meet and collaborate, fostering grassroots entrepreneurship.
