The death toll from an attack on the convoy of Borno Governor Babagana Umara Zulum in northeast Nigeria by jihadists has risen to 30. The fatalities include 12 policemen, five soldiers, four militia members, and nine civilians. The attack occurred near Baga on Lake Chad, with insurgents seizing vehicles, including an armored personnel carrier and a gun truck. Zulum was unharmed and had been visiting the area to prepare for the return of displaced residents. The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), an offshoot of Boko Haram, is the dominant insurgent force in the region and has increased attacks recently. The conflict in northeast Nigeria has resulted in 36,000 deaths and over 2 million displaced persons.

Senior Boko Haram Leader Reportedly Killed by Allies

21 Sep 2018  |  www.voanews.com
Mamman Nur, a senior Boko Haram leader, was reportedly killed by his own men due to internal disputes, particularly over his decision to release kidnapped schoolgirls. Nur's death could weaken his faction and potentially lead to further splintering, giving the Nigerian government an opportunity to act against the group. Boko Haram, known for its extreme Islamist views and opposition to Western education, has been responsible for over 30,000 deaths and the displacement of more than 2 million people. The group has also kidnapped over 1,000 children in northeastern Nigeria.
