15 Mar 2023  |  bmj.com
A study tested whether an AI algorithm, Smarturgences v1.17.0 by Milvue, could pass the rapid reporting component of the Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR) examination. The AI was compared to 26 recently qualified radiologists across 10 mock exams. The AI passed two exams when only interpretable images were included but failed all when marked like human candidates. The AI showed a sensitivity of 83.6%, specificity of 75.2%, and accuracy of 79.5% for interpretable images, compared to radiologists' 84.1% sensitivity, 87.3% specificity, and 85.2% accuracy. The study suggests AI needs further training, especially in interpreting abdominal, skull, and spine radiographs, and in identifying subtle musculoskeletal abnormalities.
