Clan leaders jailed over torture of young woman
Several clan leaders and local officials from Acanmakicinge village in Amolatar district have been sentenced to 20 months in prison for torturing a young woman accused of incest. The incident, which occurred on November 18, 2024, sparked national outrage after a video of the assault went viral. The victim, Annet Awidi, was accused of an inappropriate relationship with her uncle, Nelson Opon. The North Kyoga region Police arrested several individuals involved, and four of the accused pleaded guilty and were sentenced by Grade One Magistrate Vincent Muzeyi.
Police name children killed in Dokolo car crash
A tragic car crash in Dokolo Town Council resulted in the deaths of three school children and an elderly woman. The accident occurred on the Dokolo-Kaberamaido road when Moses Awira, head teacher of Aputi Secondary School, lost control of his vehicle, hitting a group of pupils. Three children died instantly, and a 59-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries later. Two other pupils were severely injured.
SHACU vows to pursue more land fraud cases in Lira
The State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SHACU) is intensifying its efforts to tackle land fraud in Lira City and Lira District, with Deputy Head Israel Ochwo highlighting the involvement of local politicians and technocrats. Since its inception in December 2018, SHACU has charged 542 individuals nationwide, recovering significant funds. Despite facing accusations of selective investigations, SHACU maintains its phased approach. Lira Resident City Commissioner Lawrence Egole praised the unit's work in restoring public confidence in government services. Chaos as diplomat raids Lango cultural meeting
A chaotic incident occurred at the Lango Cultural Centre in Lira city when Uganda's deputy ambassador to Sudan, Dickson Ogwang Okul, allegedly brandished a firearm during a meeting aimed at reconciling factions within the Lango cultural leadership. The meeting, convened by Otuke Resident District Commissioner George Abudul, was disrupted when Ogwang arrived uninvited, leading to protests and a tense standoff. Ogwang was eventually disarmed by police, and the meeting resumed. Cultural leaders condemned Ogwang's actions, and further investigations are expected.
Love triangle murder paralyses Lira city
In Lira City, Uganda, a love triangle led to the murder of George Aliro, a butcher, allegedly by Bazil Otim, the husband of Aliro's lover, Daisy Akullo. The incident occurred on November 7, 2024, when Aliro visited Akullo's home, unaware that Otim was waiting inside. Otim reportedly attacked Aliro with a panga, resulting in Aliro's death. The police, led by the North Kyoga Region and Lira City West Division, are investigating the case, with Akullo and another man in custody, while Otim remains at large.
Ecweru assures Uganda on Karuma Bridge repairs
State Minister for Works and Transport Musa Ecweru assured Uganda that repairs on Karuma Bridge, a crucial link to Northern Uganda, will be completed on schedule. The bridge's temporary closure for safety reasons has economic and political implications. Ecweru, along with legislators and project engineers, inspected the bridge and discussed reconstruction plans. Prof. Okeng reappointed Lira University Vice Chancellor
