Why DR Congo wants East African troops to leave

27 Oct 2023  |  BBC
The Democratic Republic of Congo has ordered the East African Community (EAC) Regional Force to leave after 11 months, citing ineffectiveness in curbing militia violence, particularly against the M23 rebel group. The EAC force, comprising troops from Burundi, Kenya, South Sudan, and Uganda, was initially deployed to oversee the withdrawal of armed groups but faced criticism for not engaging in direct combat. President Félix Tshisekedi and local communities have expressed dissatisfaction, leading to the decision not to extend the force's mandate. The UN peacekeeping force Monusco also faces criticism for its long-term failure to resolve the conflict.

The Democratic Republic of Congo has ordered the East African Community (EAC) Regional Force to leave after 11 months, citing ineffectiveness in curbing militia violence. The decision follows ongoing criticism from the Congolese government and civil society, particularly President Félix Tshisekedi, who has demanded more aggressive action against the M23 rebel group. The EAC force, which includes troops from Burundi, Kenya, South Sudan, and Uganda, was initially deployed to oversee the withdrawal of armed groups but has faced logistical challenges and local hostility. The UN peacekeeping force Monusco, also criticized for its long-term ineffectiveness, is set to withdraw by December. Recent violence has erupted again between M23 rebels and pro-government militias, further complicating the situation.

Somalia joins the East African Community

13 Oct 2023  |  BBC
Somalia has officially joined the East African Community (EAC), marking a significant step towards economic growth after decades of conflict. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud hailed the move as a beacon of hope, despite concerns about Somalia's readiness due to governance and security issues, particularly the presence of al-Shabab. The decision followed extensive negotiations and lobbying, with Somalia emphasizing its strategic coastline and economic potential. The announcement has elicited mixed reactions, with some praising the integration and others cautioning about potential challenges. The EAC aims to expand its market and integrate more Horn of Africa countries, with Djibouti and Ethiopia as potential future members.

The Nigerians lured into a trap and blackmailed for being gay

12 Oct 2023  |  BBC
Living as a gay man in Nigeria is fraught with danger, as illustrated by Mohammed's harrowing experience of being blackmailed and beaten after being lured into a trap. This form of blackmail, known as 'kito,' is rampant, with many victims unable to seek justice due to the country's strict anti-LGBT laws. The 2014 Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act has exacerbated the situation, leading to increased violence and extortion against LGBT individuals. Activists and some law enforcement officials are working to combat these crimes, but the fear of arrest and societal stigma make it difficult for victims to come forward. The article underscores the severe mental and social repercussions for those targeted, as well as the challenges in prosecuting the perpetrators.

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been accused of committing atrocities, including mass killings and sexual violence, which they deny. The conflict between the army and RSF has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and displaced millions since April 2023. The UN warns of a potential humanitarian crisis if a ceasefire is not reached, with millions at risk of starvation. Activists and organizations are providing psychological support to affected women and documenting the violence, despite communication challenges.
