28M: The night Meléndez was overwhelmed
On May 28th, during the National Strike in Meléndez, south of Cali, Colombia, the police and armed civilians violently entered the area, resulting in bloodshed at a resistance point that had not previously seen fatalities. The community had been peacefully protesting for a more inclusive Cali, with cultural and educational activities organized by the civil group Primera Línea. The police incursion led to over 20 injuries, multiple deaths including Sebastian Jacanamijoy Jansasoy and Jhonatan David Basto Goyeneche, and reports of missing persons. The violence dismantled the peaceful resistance movement and left the community in fear, with ongoing militarization in the area.
