Fossil Energies: How to Move a Pension Fund to Divest

23 Mar 2022  |  www.woz.ch
Europe's largest pension fund, ABP, has decided to divest from fossil fuels by 2023, influenced by the pressure from its three million insured members and the grassroots movement led by the NGO Fossielvrij NL. The divestment affects over fifteen billion euros in assets. Hiske Arts, a campaigner at Fossielvrij NL, played a significant role in this decision, which was also supported by employers such as universities and municipal communities. The move comes despite the Netherlands' heavy reliance on fossil fuels for energy production. Additionally, the Dutch pension fund Horeca & Catering has also decided to divest from fossil fuels due to pressure from the hospitality industry, initiated by Café de Ceuvel in Amsterdam. Meanwhile, in Switzerland, the majority of pension funds continue to invest in climate-damaging assets, with only a quarter acting in a climate-compatible manner.

Housing crisis in the Netherlands: From the tent to the university

05 Nov 2021  |  taz-de.translate.goog
The Netherlands is experiencing a severe housing crisis, affecting students across the country, with many unable to find accommodation. The crisis has led to protests and demands for government action. The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and other institutions have been criticized for not adequately addressing the issue, which has been exacerbated by policies favoring homeowners and a lack of investment in public housing. The situation is particularly difficult for international students, who face additional challenges due to a lack of local networks and information. The crisis is expected to be a top priority for the next Dutch government.
