Central Kasai: About 684 families are threatened with eviction by the RVA in Kananga
Around 684 families living in the Plateau neighborhood within the perimeter of Kananga airport are facing threats of house demolition by the Régie des Voies Aériennes (RVA/Kananga). The families, who claim to hold legally issued documents from the authorities dating back to 2000, are calling for the intervention of the head of state to prevent social unrest. The mayor of Kananga has issued a notice for the occupants to voluntarily vacate the land by August 28, with demolition equipment already positioned at the airport for a potential operation.
DRC-Angola: Already one death among the Congolese returnees living in difficult conditions at Kalambambuji
A minor has died due to lack of food among the 4,187 Congolese who were refugees in Angola and have returned to the DRC via the Kalambambuji border post. These returnees are living in difficult conditions, lacking food and shelter. Isaac Kalombo Shakasanzambi, a local leader, describes the situation as catastrophic, with refugees sleeping outside and authorities being slow to respond. The governor of Kasaï Central, Martin Kabuya, has acknowledged the situation and plans to visit the area. Meanwhile, Deller Kawino, a provincial minister, has been at the Kamako border post to welcome returnees.
Kasaï Central: The UNJHRO completes the first stage of popular consultations for transitional justice
The United Nations Joint Human Rights Office in Kananga has completed the first phase of consultations with the populations of Kasaï Central to gather local community perceptions on justice, reparations, and prevention for the establishment of transitional justice mechanisms, including a provincial truth, justice, and reconciliation commission. The consultations are part of the 'Peace, Justice, Reconciliation, and Reconstruction in Kasaï Central' project, launched on August 13, 2019, by Governor Martin Kabuya and funded by the Peacebuilding Fund. The project is implemented by the UNJHRO, Search for Common Ground, and the UNDP, coordinated by the provincial government of Kasaï Central, and could be replicated in other provinces experiencing crises.
DRC-Angola: Nearly 4,000 Congolese returnees in distress at Kalambambuji (Luiza)
Nearly 4,000 Congolese who were refugees in Angola have returned to the DRC through the Kalambambuji border post, 250 km southwest of Kananga in Luiza territory, Kasaï Central, and are in a difficult situation. They are tired, lack basic necessities, and are sleeping outdoors, with one child already dead due to hunger and exposure. Isaac Kalombo Shakasanzambi, a local leader, has described the situation as catastrophic, with insufficient aid provided. The governor of Kasaï Central, Martin Kabuya, has acknowledged the situation and plans to visit the area. Meanwhile, Deller Kawino, a provincial minister, has been at the Kamako border post to welcome returnees. The refugees decided to leave the camp in Angola and return to the DRC on foot without waiting for the UNHCR's preparations for a dignified return.
DRC: More Chinese nationals accused of illegal stay arrested in Kananga
Three Chinese nationals working for CREC7 were arrested in Kananga, Kasaï Central, on charges of illegal stay. An anonymous migration officer reported that they were hiding in a house and are now detained, awaiting expulsion. Seven other Chinese nationals were also arrested and expelled for the same reason. CREC7's lawyer, Mathieu Lukusa Lufukona, accused Governor Martin Kabuya of targeting Chinese workers to replace CREC7 with his own company for road construction and toll revenue. The expelled workers were found to have legal stay upon arrival in Kinshasa, and CREC7 has filed a complaint against Governor Kabuya.
