India showcases enhanced capability of Akash weapon system
The Indian Air Force and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) showcased the enhanced capability of the Akash semi-mobile surface-to-air missile system, successfully intercepting four unmanned aerial targets from a single firing unit. The system's central acquisition radar detected the targets at a range of 150 km and altitude of 18,000 m, coordinating with the Group Control Centre to deploy two Akash Air Force Launchers armed with missiles to intercept the targets at a distance of 25 km. This demonstration marked India as the first country to engage four aerial targets simultaneously at 25 km ranges using a single firing unit.
Bangladesh Army test-fires CS/AA3 anti-aircraft guns
The Bangladesh Army's Adhoc 57 Air Defence Regiment Artillery conducted its first test-firing of two CS/AA3 twin-barrel anti-aircraft gun systems at the Inanistha AD Firing Range in Cox's Bazar. The CS/AA3, a low-altitude, short-range air-defense weapon, is capable of hitting ground and air targets at a maximum strike range of 4 km. Manufactured by China North Industries Group Corporation Limited (Norinco), the system is a license-produced version of Switzerland's Oerlikon GDF-002 and is designed to intercept low and slow-flying threats. The induction of at least three CS/AA3 systems into the Bangladesh Army has been confirmed.
Update: Finland orders more Sisu GTP 4×4 off-road vehicles
The Finnish Defence Forces have placed an order for an additional 13 Sisu GTP 4×4 off-road vehicles, valued at EUR 9.7 million, to add to the 31 vehicles previously procured. The order was authorized by Finnish Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen and announced by the defence ministry. The vehicles come in different configurations, including general purpose and armoured personnel variants. Sisu Auto, the manufacturer, has begun serial production and delivery of the vehicles, with the new batch expected to be delivered in 2024.
Update: Pyongyang fired artillery shells into waters near border, says South Korea
North Korea fired over 200 artillery shells into waters near South Korean islands on 5 January 2024, with no casualties or damages reported. The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) labeled the action as a provocation linked to North Korea's withdrawal from a 2018 inter-Korean military agreement. The JCS, in collaboration with the US military, is analyzing the incident and planning responsive measures. Subsequent artillery drills were conducted by North Korea on 6 and 7 January, firing additional shells into the buffer zone.

The People’s Liberation Army’s Hong Kong Garrison has acquired at least 13 new 4×4 armoured vehicles, including six Dongfeng Mengshi CSK181 armoured vehicles, four PCP001 fire-support vehicles, two Red Arrow 10 launch vehicles, and one support vehicle. The CSK181 vehicles are equipped with a 12.7 mm machine gun, and the PCP001 vehicles feature an 82 mm rapid-deployment automatic mortar system. The vehicles were showcased in footage by China Central Television.
BAE Systems, AMS to support Ukraine artillery systems
BAE Systems and AMS Integrated Solutions have signed an agreement to provide maintenance, repair, and overhaul services for artillery systems in Ukraine. This partnership aims to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine by offering specialized artillery systems support directly within the country. The agreement includes services for artillery weapons donated by the UK government, with AMS extending these services through its existing maintenance centers in Ukraine. The UK has committed GBP4.6 billion in military assistance to Ukraine since February 2022, making it the second largest provider of such aid.

Japan accelerates Type 12 deployment
Japan's Ministry of Defense has expedited the deployment of the upgraded Type 12 surface-to-ship missile to 2025, a year earlier than planned, to enhance its stand-off defense capabilities. The upgraded missile, developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, features a range of 200–1,000 km and can be launched from land, aircraft, and ships. This move is part of Japan's National Defense Strategy to counter military threats from China, North Korea, and Russia. Indian Army outlines loiter munition procurement programme
The Indian Army has announced a procurement programme for canister-launched anti-armour loiter munition (CALM) systems to enhance the operational efficiency of its mechanised infantry. The programme includes the acquisition of 180 CALM systems, 45 ground control stations, 14 indoor simulators, and other associated accessories. The CALM systems will be integrated into T-72 and T-90 main battle tanks, BMP-2 armoured fighting vehicles, and other reconnaissance vehicles, providing remote-controlled, beyond-visual-line-of-sight capabilities to destroy enemy armoured fighting vehicles at stand-off ranges of up to 15 km.
India test-fires multiple warhead variants of Agni V missile
India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully test-fired the Agni V intermediate-range ballistic missile equipped with multiple independently targeted re-entry vehicle (MIRV) technology for the first time. The test, named 'Mission Divyastra', was conducted from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha. This achievement places India among the few countries with deployable MIRV technology. The Agni V missile, a road-mobile IRBM, can carry single or multiple warheads over ranges up to 5,500 km and is designed for strategic roles within the Indian Armed Forces.
Pakistan unveils Haider main battle tank
Pakistan's state-owned Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT) unveiled the Haider main battle tank (MBT), a variant of the Chinese VT4 MBT, during a rollout ceremony on 6 March. The Haider MBT, manufactured in collaboration with China North Industries Group Corporation Limited (Norinco) and local industries, is designed for the Pakistan Army. It features a 125 mm smoothbore gun, a 7.62 mm co-axial machine gun, and a remotely operated weapon system. The tank also includes stabilised sights with thermal imagers and a laser warning system. Compared to VT4s delivered to Thailand and Nigeria, the Haider has a different type of explosive reactive armour.
Philippine Army receives first batch of Guarani APCs
The Philippine Army has received the first batch of five Guarani 6×6 wheeled armoured personnel carriers (APCs) from Elbit Systems, with the vehicles currently undergoing technical inspection. The APCs were displayed during a ceremony at Camp O'Donnell, alongside the recently acquired Sabrah ASCOD II light tanks. The acquisition is part of a USD46 million contract awarded to Elbit Systems in February 2020, aimed at enhancing the army's capabilities under the ‘Wheeled Armoured Personnel Carrier Acquisition Project'.
Japan To Order New Combat Vehicles In 2024
The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) will procure two new vehicles based on the Type 16 8×8 wheeled Mobile Combat Vehicle (MCV) in 2024. The Japan Ministry of Defense (MoD) has allocated JPY24.2 billion to procure 24 infantry combat vehicles (ICVs) and JPY8 billion to procure eight manoeuvre mortar combat vehicles (MMCVs). Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) will be contracted for the procurement, with deliveries starting in 2027 and concluding in 2028.
HAL to produce engines for Indian Air Force MiG-29s
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has been contracted to produce over 100 Klimov RD-33 engines for the Indian Air Force's MiG-29 fleet, under a contract worth INR52.497 billion (USD634.4 million) announced by the Indian Ministry of Defence. The engines will be produced at HAL's Koraput Division in India, under a transfer of technology licence from the Russian original equipment manufacturer. The new engines aim to sustain the operational capability of the MiG-29 fleet and increase the indigenous content of future repair and overhaul tasks.
Australia awards contract for guided missile production
The Australian Department of Defence has awarded a AUD37.4 million contract to Lockheed Martin Australia to manufacture guided multiple launch rocket system missiles. The production will take place at the Defence Establishment Orchard Hills in Sydney, with initial missiles expected by 2025. This contract includes the transfer of technical data and specialized training in the US. The procurement of 20 HIMARS from the US was approved in January 2023, with additional systems recommended by Australia's Defence Strategic Review.

The missile intercepted a high-speed unmanned aerial target at low altitude, validating the complete weapon system, including the missile with an indigenously developed RF seeker, launcher, multifunction radar, and command, control, and communication system. The Akash-NG, a short-range mobile SAM system with a range of 50-60 km, features a dual-pulse solid-fuel rocket motor and is set for user trials following the successful test.

South Korea Accelerates Low-Altitude Missile Defence System Development
South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) has expedited the development of the low-altitude missile defence (LAMD) system by a year to counter North Korean long-range artillery. Initially planned for 2025, the project will now be completed in 2024. Local military technology firm LIG Nex1, in collaboration with the Agency for Defense Development (ADD), began developing the system in early 2022. Core technological development was finished in June 2023 to meet the new timeline.
