Zimbabwe's Patriotic Bill: A Step Towards Rebranding or Reinforced Isolation?
The article by Khumbulani Muleya discusses the implications of Zimbabwe's proposed Patriotic Bill, which resembles the United States' Logan Act of 1799. The bill aims to criminalize citizens who criticize the government, which could impact opposition members, journalists, and NGOs. The author suggests that the bill's enforcement of patriotism could further damage Zimbabwe's international relations and human rights reputation. The bill is still in the proposal stage and requires a parliamentary majority to pass. Various perspectives are presented, including those of Dr. Ibbo Mandaza, who calls for a petition against the bill, political analyst Richard Mahomva, who sees it as providing a debate platform, and legal expert Nyasha Manhau, who believes it aligns with national ethos. The article questions whether the bill will lead to positive change or further isolate Zimbabwe.
Covid-19 Surge in Zimbabwe Drives Stringent Lockdown Measures
The article by Khumbulani Muleya discusses the surge in Covid-19 infections in Zimbabwe, driven by variants such as Delta and Beta, which has led to the government imposing stricter lockdown measures, including a ban on intercity travel. The health delivery system in Zimbabwe is overwhelmed, and the pandemic is pushing many Zimbabweans into poverty, especially with the government's inability to provide social grants. Despite a progressive vaccination program, the vaccines are still investigational, and no cure for the variants has been found. Health officials encourage vaccination to prevent hospitalization and death. Citizens are concerned about the drastic measures affecting commuting and livelihoods, particularly in the context of Zimbabwe's pre-existing economic challenges.

Pinocchio translated into Shona
The classic Italian fairy-tale 'Pinocchio' has been translated into Shona, a language spoken in Zimbabwe, in a book titled 'Pinokiyo'. The translation was done by Elvas Mari, former director of the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe, and Ignatius Tirivangani Mabasa, a renowned writer and musician. The Italian Embassy in Harare donated over 1,000 copies of 'Pinokiyo' to the Zimbabwean Primary and Secondary Education ministry for distribution to 500 schools. The donation event, which also celebrated the sixth edition of the Italian Cuisine Week, featured cultural activities and was attended by various school representatives. The National Arts Council of Zimbabwe expressed hope that the book will inspire creativity among young readers.
Born in 1988 and raised in Mbare, Nyaude is one of the most successful of Zimbabwe’s younger generation of painters. His dramatic and satirical paintings, based on visualisation of Shona proverbs and contemporary urban slang, defy characterisation.
