Americans are estimated to spend over $24 billion on gifts this holiday season, with 84% participating in gift exchanges such as Secret Santa and White Elephant. The survey, commissioned by Big Lots and conducted by OnePoll, involved 2,000 U.S. adults who celebrate Christmas. It found that participants plan to join an average of six gift exchanges and spend $88 in total. Gen Z and millennials are the most active in gift exchanges, while Gen X and baby boomers participate less. Most shopping is done in-person, with budget limits averaging $49 per exchange, although 87% expect to exceed this limit. Discounted prices are a significant factor in shopping decisions, with 49% preferring to shop at places offering discounts.
