Maria Assaf is a Colombian-Canadian freelance journalist focusing on Latin American news. She has written for Latin American, Filipino and West Indian publications and done academic research in Colombia's conflict areas as well as in Turkey. Maria completed her bachelor degree in journalism at Ryerson University and fulfilled an MA in Development and Emergency Practice at Oxford Brookes University, which led her to research the freedom of expression of Syrian refugees in Turkey.
