Kaplan was taken by Hamas members who entered her building in the kibbutz Holim and handed her children to a neighbor. The Stolarz family later confirmed Kaplan's death, which coincided with the search for another missing woman by the brother of Kaplan's husband. Stolarz had previously shared various theories about Kaplan's disappearance but ultimately learned of her death. He criticized the Israeli government for not doing enough to free hostages, including his niece, and expressed surprise at the breach of security by Hamas, despite the sophisticated and expensive border security measures. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that security forces have several critical areas under control and has declared total war with a siege on Palestinian territories.
