About Mary
She is a writer, analyst, and freelance investigative journalist on human rights and political issues in Iran, particularly women’s rights and Christians’ rights; with more than 6 years of experience in these fields in Iran and the US.

She was awarded the annual prize of “The Stephanus Foundation for Persecuted Christians”, one of the biggest German-based foundations, in 2023, for her selfishness and bravery in informing the situation of Christian converts and human rights violations in Iran.

Based on her lived experience within and without Iran as an activist, dissident of the Islamic Republic of Iran, woman, converted Christian with an Islamic background, and former political prisoner, she thoroughly acquaints with the nature of the Islamic Republic, security issues and a wide range of forms of persecution in Iran.

She cooperated with Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) for more than four years from 2018 until 2022, even during her own imprisonment time, as a freelance correspondent and investigative journalist. After years of highly risky investigative journalism efforts, in 2019 the US sanctioned two prisons in Iran due to the extreme prisoners' rights violation by the Islamic Republic of Iran.Their team was from the rare teams and individuals that were involved in this achievement.

She, as a freelancer, interviewed activists, victims of human rights violations, and their family members. Moreover, she wrote many impactful analyses, articles, photo reports, field reports, and opinion pieces for years regarding women's rights, Christians’ rights as an unrecognized religious minority, serial killings, Iranian elections, laborers‘ rights, social, cultural and economic issues and oppression against vulnerable groups in various platforms such as the Peace-Mark journal.

She also writes news reports covering Iran’s issues that are translated into German and published by ISHR organization.

She writes opinion pieces in the Iranian Me Too Movement.

Joseph Hovsepian: That dismembered body was my father's

15 Feb 2024  |  www.peace-mark.org
Joseph Hovsepian, the son of the late Haik Hovsepian Mehr, an Iranian-Armenian bishop and human rights activist, recounts the events surrounding his father's abduction and murder by the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence in 1994. Haik was a prominent figure advocating for religious freedom, particularly known for his efforts to overturn the death sentence of Pastor Mehdi Dibaj. Joseph's narrative details the emotional and psychological impact of his father's death on his family, his own journey to continue his father's legacy through Hovsepian Ministries, and the broader implications for human rights and religious freedom in Iran. The interview also touches on the challenges faced by the family in the aftermath of Haik's murder, including the societal and governmental pressures, and the personal transformation Joseph underwent as he took on the responsibility of supporting his family.

Boycotting Elections: Deceiving the People or Transitioning from Government?

15 Feb 2024  |  www.peace-mark.org
The article by Mari Mohammadi critiques the reformist faction in Iran, accusing them of deceiving the public and reducing their demands to a tool for achieving their own goals. It discusses the different reactions within the reformist camp to the upcoming thirteenth presidential election in Iran, highlighting the faction's tactics and strategies over the past 24 years. The author argues that the reformists have intertwined human rights and politics for their benefit, misleading the public with false titles and delaying the recognition of their true nature. The article also criticizes the manipulation of public perception through selective information, particularly in the 2016 election between Ebrahim Raisi and Hassan Rouhani. It concludes that the reformists' actions serve the ultimate goal of the Islamic Republic, which is indifferent to the people's votes and lives, and that discussions on the gender of the president or the transformation of specific individuals are futile and detrimental to the people.

The article by Fatemeh Mohammadi provides an in-depth look into the lives of sex workers in the Golberg and Rashid streets of Tehran, known for prostitution. The journalist interviews local residents, business owners, and the sex workers themselves, revealing a complex picture of acceptance, exploitation, and survival. Young girls and older women alike are seen engaging in sex work, some out of financial necessity to support their families or education. The article discusses the risks involved, including violence and exploitation by clients and the police's indifference due to corruption. The sex workers share their stories of how they entered the trade, their daily struggles, and their hopes for escaping the cycle of poverty and exploitation. The article ends with a poignant verse by Forough Farrokhzad, highlighting the societal forces that push women into prostitution.

Iranian Christian Activist Hailed by Trump Says Iran Detaining 15 Other Christians

18 Jun 2020  |  Voice of America
Mary Mohammadi, an Iranian Christian convert and rights activist, reported that Iran has detained 15 Christians, adding to its history of repressing religious minorities. Mohammadi, who was temporarily released from prison on February 26 after being detained for participating in protests, highlighted the plight of Christians in Iran, including those in detention and others free on bail awaiting trial. The U.S. State Department's 2019 report on religious freedom in Iran corroborated the ongoing targeting of Christian converts. U.S. President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo have both expressed concern over Mohammadi's detention. Iran's constitution recognizes Christians as a religious minority but does not acknowledge converts, leading to rights abuses. Mohammadi calls for international pressure on Tehran to change its treatment of Christians. Open Doors ranked Iran as the 9th most repressive country for Christians in 2019.
