Guinea: September 28 Massacres - Court Postpones Possible Reclassification as Crimes Against Humanity

21 Mar 2024  |  fr.allafrica.com
On March 20, 2024, the Guinean court presiding over the historic trial of the September 28, 2009, massacre, where over 150 civilians were killed by security forces during an opposition meeting, decided to postpone the potential reclassification of the events as crimes against humanity until judgment. The defense, led by Maître Pépé Antoine Lamah, expressed anger and plans to appeal, citing a violation of the right to a fair trial. The appeal court will decide if the events can be considered crimes against humanity, which would support the accusation based on the principle of command responsibility. The trial is set to resume on March 25 with the beginning of confrontations. Former Guinean leader Moussa Dadis Camara and ten other former military and government officials have been on trial since September 2022 for the massacre, which resulted in at least 156 deaths, hundreds of injuries, and at least 109 women raped, according to a report by a UN-mandated international commission of inquiry.

Guinea: Call for General Strike Starting This Monday, February 26

26 Feb 2024  |  fr.allafrica.com
In Guinea, 13 trade unions have called for an indefinite general strike starting Monday, February 26, to demand lower prices for basic necessities and an end to media censorship. Several radio and television stations have stopped broadcasting. Despite calls for dialogue from authorities, employers, and religious leaders, the unions have upheld their strike call, with key economic sectors joining. The strike will test the syndical movement and the junta, which has been in power since September 5, 2021. The unions also demand the release of journalist Sékou Jamal Pendessa, who was recently sentenced to three months in prison. Overnight, youths in Conakry began erecting barricades to disrupt traffic.
