Stitching tradition and modernity
Haya Khalid, a self-taught fashion designer from the West Bank city of Ramallah, is creating modern clothing inspired by traditional Palestinian heritage. Despite her degree in computer engineering, Haya chose to follow her passion for fashion. Her brand, ReBorn, incorporates traditional Palestinian textiles and embroidery into contemporary designs, aiming to preserve and modernize Palestinian cultural heritage. Haya's work is a response to the appropriation of Palestinian designs by high-end Israeli fashion designers. She operates from her bedroom due to financial constraints and has received a grant from the Business Women Forum in Ramallah. Haya aspires to study at the Milano Fashion Institute and dreams of her brand gaining international recognition akin to French fashion houses. She faces challenges in marketing her designs internationally due to restrictions on selling through platforms like Amazon and Etsy from Palestine.
