What future awaits the children of Yemen forced to leave their schools?
The war in Yemen has not only claimed the lives of hundreds of children but also stolen their future, with schools being destroyed or converted into military camps. UNICEF reports that by the end of September 2017, 256 schools were completely destroyed, and 1413 were partially damaged due to the conflict. Over two million children were out of school during the 2016/2017 academic year, with at least 350,000 forced out due to the war. The Ministry of Education, despite the destruction of 2531 schools, insists on continuing education. UNICEF has supported education by repairing schools and providing tents for temporary classrooms. The Ministry has repaired partially damaged schools but lacks the resources to rebuild completely destroyed ones. UNICEF urges all parties to protect schools and resolve the teacher salary crisis to enable children's education.
