Kennedy Odede, a Kenyan social entrepreneur from Nairobi's Kibera slum, has transformed his life and that of his community through Shining Hope for Communities (Shofco), an organization he founded. Shofco provides essential services such as health, education, and clean water to thousands of Kibera's residents. Odede's journey began with a football club-cum-movement for social justice, which evolved into a social enterprise with various programs for economic empowerment, a well-stocked library, medical facilities, and a newsroom for the Ghetto Mirror publication. Odede's efforts have been recognized internationally, including being listed in Forbes Top 30 Under 30 and receiving the People’s Choice Award for outstanding social entrepreneur. Shofco's success has led to plans for further expansion, including becoming a licensed deposit and lending institution.

Medical researchers have developed a digital package to manage epilepsy using smartphones, which can monitor seizures and remind patients to take medication. This innovation, led by Lakshmi Narasimhan Ranganathan and his team at the Madras Medical College Institute of Neurology, aims to improve the lives of the 10 million epilepsy patients in Africa, many of whom face stigma and lack conventional medication. The World Health Organisation notes that up to 70% of epilepsy cases respond positively to treatment. The research, published in the International Journal of Epilepsy, suggests that mobile apps can detect motion and collect data for more accurate medication dosing, potentially leading to thematic mobile phones for specific conditions like epilepsy.
