The Next National Security Adviser: Balancing Expertise and Military Background

04 Apr 2024  |  dailypost.ng
The article discusses the potential candidates for Nigeria's next National Security Adviser (NSA) under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The current NSA, Babagana Monguno, is the longest-serving in the role. Names like Major General Abdulrahman Dambazau (rtd) and Mallam Nuhu Ribadu are being considered. The article debates whether the NSA role should be reserved for military personnel, particularly Generals. It references the Terrorism Prevention Act and the National Counter Terrorism Strategy (NACTEST) developed under Colonel Sambo Dasuki (rtd), which introduced a soft approach to countering terrorism. The piece also compares the NSA role in Nigeria to that in the United States, noting that the US often appoints non-military professionals to the position. The author, Shuaib, argues that the NSA should not be a political appointment but should be based on knowledge and ability to coordinate security matters effectively.
