The Impressive State of Investigative Reporting in the Baltics

04 Apr 2024  |  gijn.org
The Baltic countries, comprising Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, have shown significant progress in investigative reporting since gaining independence in 1991 and especially after Russia's 2014 invasion into Ukraine. Public broadcasters in these countries have developed popular investigative programs, such as LRT Tyrimai in Lithuania, De Facto and Aizliegtais Paņēmiens in Latvia, and Pealtnägija and Insight in Estonia. These programs cover a range of topics from corruption and abuse of power to social issues and have high viewership ratings. Additionally, there are independent investigative units like 15 Min in Lithuania and the Baltic Center for Investigative Journalism, re:baltica, which publishes in three languages and is a member of several international organizations. The presence of these programs on public television indicates a demand for professional coverage of important social issues and supports a culture of independence from political and financial oligarchic groups common in post-Soviet countries.
