Human traffickers exploit desperation of Ukrainian refugees and their children

16 Nov 2022  |  www.pbs.org
Over 4.5 million Ukrainian refugees have sought refuge in the EU, with Poland hosting a significant number. Despite a warm welcome and access to social benefits, the influx of women and children has led to increased risks of sexual and labor exploitation. Elzbieta Jarmulska's initiative, Women Take the Wheel, provides safe transportation to avoid reliance on male strangers. Polish Police have implemented a zero tolerance policy, with increased surveillance and support. However, language barriers and lack of local knowledge leave some refugees vulnerable. The EU is working to address these issues, with Commissioner Ylva Johansson focusing on strengthening sanctions and legal measures against trafficking and exploitation.
