Ramaphosa’s ‘credibility may weaken due to no action on graft’

07 May 2019  |  citizen.co.za
President Cyril Ramaphosa's credibility is being questioned due to his inaction against corruption within the ANC. Political analyst Dr. Sethulego Matebesi from the University of the Free State suggests that Ramaphosa's strategy of using state institutions like the NPA to address corruption, rather than directly removing corrupt individuals, might be seen as a lack of seriousness about party renewal. The ANC's national secretary-general, Ace Magashule, has been under scrutiny after a book by Pieter-Louis Myburgh exposed alleged corruption during his time as the Free State premier. Despite these challenges, Matebesi believes Ramaphosa could still attract traditional ANC members and predicts a modest increase in party numbers in the upcoming election.

The project is plagued by mismanagement and procurement issues, contributing to the province's irregular expenditure. Despite claims of nearing completion, doubts remain about its operational status.

Two of these tenders were awarded to Malembe's company, Botlkowa Holdings (Pty) Ltd. Questions regarding the transparency of the tender process and potential nepotism were raised, but neither the department's director, Muhammed Ismail, nor Premier Magashule responded to inquiries. David Lewis of Corruption Watch commented on the ethical concerns surrounding the awarding of tenders to the premier's daughter, suggesting it could be indicative of deeper issues of corruption.
