25 Dec 2021  |  congocheck.net
A video showing a large crowd has been falsely presented as the triumphant welcome of Félix Tshisekedi in Mbuji-Mayi. In reality, the video dates back to 2019 and depicts a protest against the then Haitian President Jovenel Moïse in Port-au-Prince. The misinformation was spread on Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp. Congo Check, alerted by a journalist from Deutsche Welle, used Google Lens to trace the video's origin and confirmed its actual context through reverse image search and comparison with news articles.

DRC: No member of the European Union humanitarian airlift delegation tested positive for Covid-19

08 Jun 2020  |  congocheck.net
Following the publication of a statement by the European Union delegation in the DRC regarding the infection of two of its agents with Coronavirus, several virulent publications falsely claimed that members of the EU humanitarian airlift to the DRC brought the virus into the country. The EU delegation clarified that the two positive cases were local staff members, not part of the humanitarian airlift. The misinformation led to public outrage against the EU humanitarian efforts. The EU's humanitarian airlift is part of its broader response to the pandemic, supporting Africa with €3.25 billion. The two local infections were confirmed on June 6, 2020, and the delegation arrived in Kinshasa on June 8, 2020.

False, this deceased senior advisor was not part of the presidency

28 May 2020  |  congocheck.net
In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, misinformation circulated regarding the death of Atufuka Mbunze Galung, falsely linking him to a series of deaths within the presidential team, with conspiracy theories suggesting poisoning. However, Galung was not part of the presidency but was a member of the High Council for Audiovisual and Communication (CSAC). The misinformation was spread through a doctored image mimicking the official presidential page. Galung had a distinguished career in journalism at the RTNC and served in various roles, including as a communication advisor to former Prime Minister Adolphe Muzito. He passed away after a short illness, leaving behind a wife and five children.

Beware of these fake tips attributed to the WHO

16 Apr 2020  |  congocheck.net
A message falsely attributed to the World Health Organization circulating on WhatsApp and Facebook groups provides incorrect and dangerous advice on protecting against COVID-19. The article debunks several myths, such as the virus's inability to withstand certain temperatures, the effectiveness of sunbathing or hot baths in killing the virus, and a supposed quick breath test for diagnosis. It emphasizes that there is no direct link between climate and the virus's spread, and that the only way to confirm infection is through proper testing. The article also reminds readers of the actual symptoms of COVID-19, modes of transmission, and effective prevention methods. It notes that there is currently no vaccine for the coronavirus and was written in collaboration with Internews through its CREC commission for the COVID-19 response.

The film was shot over 90 days in various locations in Uganda and stars Arnold Mubangizi as Yoweri Museveni.
