UN Recognitions and the Philippines: Debunking Social Media Claims
The article discusses the three prestigious recognitions handed out by the United Nations: the United Nations Public Service Awards, the UN Secretary General Awards, and the International Union of Architects 2030 Award. The Public Service Award, established in 2003, honors public service institutions for their innovative contributions to effective public administration. The Philippines received this award twice, once for Naga City in 2003 and again for Mandaluyong’s Project Teach in 2015. The Secretary General Awards are for UN Secretariat personnel who show exceptional performance. The International Union of Architects 2030 Award, in partnership with UN Habitat, honors architects whose work contributes to the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The article also debunks a false claim being circulated on social media.
FALSE: New P500 bill design replaces Aquinos with Philippine tarsier
The article addresses a false claim circulating on Facebook about the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) issuing a new P500 bill design featuring the Philippine tarsier, replacing the images of Ninoy and Cory Aquino. The claim, which has been widely shared, is debunked as the BSP has only announced a new design for the P1,000 bill, which will now feature the Philippine eagle instead of World War 2 heroes. The new P1,000 note is made from polymer and includes enhanced security features. BSP Governor Benjamin Diokno confirmed that there has been no discussion about changing the P500 bill's design and that future banknotes will focus on Philippine fauna and flora. The false post about the P500 bill also misleadingly linked to an online shopping site.
