Taliban Collect 10 Million Afghanis ‘Ushr’ in Takhar Province
Taliban officials in Takhar province, Afghanistan, have collected over 10 million Afghanis as an Islamic tax called 'ushr' from local farmers in the past four months. Farmers are distressed by this taxation, as they have already been struggling with the effects of drought, plant diseases, and pests. Despite the hardships, the Taliban have enforced the collection of 'ushr,' which is 10% of agricultural products. Farmers like Faqir Mohammad and Abdul Aziz have voiced their concerns, with Faqir criticizing the lack of support such as genetically modified seeds in return for the tax. Mawlawi Rahimullah Ahadi, the Taliban's head of agriculture for Takhar, confirmed the collection and submission of the funds to the bank. The Taliban have mandated that 'ushr' be handed over to mosque imams and have warned of consequences for non-compliance, citing orders from their leader, Mullah Hebatullah Akhundzadah.
