Is a Second Cold War Underway for Ukraine?
On June 22, the EU Foreign Ministers decided to extend economic sanctions on Russia until January 31, 2016, due to its involvement in Ukraine. Sanctions target energy, finance, and defense sectors and were initially imposed in response to Russia's annexation of Crimea and support for Eastern Ukrainian separatists. Despite sanctions, Russia secured a deal with Greece for the Turkish Stream pipeline and announced a partnership with Shell for a Baltic pipeline to Germany. The sanctions are costing Europe and Switzerland 100 billion euros in import-export value and risking two million jobs. Countries like Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands have been significantly affected by Russia's ban on importing many agricultural and food products from the EU.
