Frontex Allegedly Concealed Pushbacks of Refugees

30 Jul 2022  |  sverigesradio.se
The term 'pushback' refers to various actions taken by EU member states or their authorities to force refugees and migrants out of the country while preventing access to legal and procedural frameworks, thereby circumventing international asylum legislation. These methods are often described as brutal and are usually carried out at the country's and EU's external borders. However, there have also been reports from countries like Greece where refugees and migrants who were in the country have been detained and then deported despite their intention to seek asylum.

Fires have repeatedly occurred in and around the Moria camp on the Greek island of Lesbos, leaving thousands of refugees to sleep on roads, in olive groves, and under trees. Only the metal skeletons of the tents and barracks that once made up the Moria camp remain. Volunteer Shirin, who lives on Lesbos, reports that they are doing what they can to distribute sleeping bags, water, and tents to the stranded refugees. With no solution yet announced for the immediate needs of the thousands of refugees and migrants who lived in the camp, many are facing another night on one of Lesbos' roads.

On October 3, 2011, Karen, a custodial staff member, was fatally assaulted by an inmate at a detention center in Huddinge, Sweden, due to a breach in protocol where she was left alone with the inmate. Despite previous warnings from employees and union representatives about the dangers of working alone, no changes were made to the policy. A press conference was held by Kriminalvården officials, who falsely claimed Karen was not alone during the incident. The P3 Documentary features interviews with various individuals connected to the case, including union chairman Patrik Öhrnell and Karen's brother, Mattias Gebreab.

Captivating Glow

Golden Dawn's leader Nikolaos Michaloliakos campaigned for the early year elections from his detention cell in Korydallos Prison, accused of running a criminal organization. Despite the pre-trial detention of most of its MPs, the far-right party maintained its position, securing over six percent of votes in the January 2015 elections. The investigation against the party's leadership and members began after the murder of 34-year-old artist and anti-fascist Pavlos Fyssas in 2013. Prosecutors allege Golden Dawn operates more like a criminal organization than a political party, with charges including murder, arson, and extortion. The Agios Panteleimonas Police Station in Athens is suspected of collusion with Golden Dawn. The trial is set to start on May 7, with 69 members facing charges. Golden Dawn's ideology is right-wing extremist and nationalist, and they gained significant parliamentary representation amid Greece's economic crisis.
