Risaralda Human Rights Table reports about 180 violations during the strike

08 Jul 2021  |  RCN Radio
Since the start of protests in Colombia on April 28, the Risaralda Human Rights Table, comprising defenders from unions, organizations, collectives, and independents, has recorded approximately 180 instances of physical aggression, violent dispersal of protests, arbitrary detentions, and even the use of firearms by public forces. Lawyer Adriana González, a member of the Table, reported these findings on RCN Radio and will present them to the International Mission S.O.S Colombia in Pereira. The aim is to pressure the national government to return to a state of democracy by respecting and guaranteeing the rights of all citizens, as per its international obligations.

Forgotten Places by the Pandemic

05 Feb 2021  |  laverdadnoticias.com
The indigenous population in Mexico has increased to 6.1% of the total population, with 865,972 people not speaking Spanish, concentrated in Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Yucatán. Despite the pandemic, translated messages in indigenous languages remain minimal. Indigenous communities in Peru, totaling 55, have lost over 37,000 lives to COVID-19. Many are days away from supply centers, facing inaccessible prices and lack of government support. Comando Matico activists provide medical treatment to these communities. In Paraguay, the Nanawa community, bordering Argentina, has been economically devastated by the pandemic, with strict border controls affecting families reliant on Argentine commerce. Argentina and Paraguay have reported over 1.9 million and 130,260 COVID-19 cases, respectively. Migrants in northern Italy face aggression from local police, with activists helping them. In Spain, abandoned villages are sought after for habitation, offering a lifestyle away from large agglomerations, while cities like Málaga face severe pandemic restrictions.

Risaralda: Women's organizations reject femicides and violence during quarantine

17 Apr 2020  |  RCN Radio
Women's organizations in Risaralda, Colombia, are calling on the national government to develop comprehensive strategies to ensure the safety and lives of women in the country, in light of nearly 20 femicides and over 1,600 calls to the domestic violence hotline during the quarantine. Spokesperson Ángela Arias from the Encuentro de Mujeres de Risaralda expressed alarm at the 79% increase in reports and the lack of effective response from national hotlines, urging for the creation and implementation of strategies that protect women's lives holistically, including socio-economic measures amidst the health emergency.
