Former Forum Editor Yeung Completes Testimony in Jimmy Lai's National Security Case; Sedition Sentence May Increase if Convicted After Implementation of Article 23
Jimmy Lai, founder of Next Digital and Apple Daily, along with three companies, are charged with 'collusion with foreign forces' and 'conspiracy to print seditious publications' under Hong Kong's National Security Law. The trial entered its 43rd day on March 12, 2023, with former Apple Daily forum editor Yeung Ching-kee completing his testimony. The prosecution is set to call Li Yu-hsuan, one of the '12 Hongkongers,' as the fourth co-defendant witness. A significant aspect of the case is the potential increase in sentencing for sedition crimes under the proposed Article 23 legislation, which could result in a ten-year prison term if implemented before Lai's verdict.
