The Dairy Sector in Haiti
Haiti's dairy industry, with an annual turnover of approximately $120 million, involves producers, sellers, and processors and is one of the country's top five import items. Despite having over 1 million cattle, local production meets only 25-30% of demand. Challenges include electricity for preservation, cattle theft, and individualistic farming practices. Dr. Michel Chancy suggests solutions like improved security, veterinary care, and nutrition for cattle, as well as solidarity cooperatives to boost production. The Lèt Agogo network, established by VETERIMED, has over 20 dairies and helps with production, processing, and marketing. The state is encouraged to control imports and integrate local dairy into academic institution food programs to support the market.
Festi Patate: A Successful Sixth Edition
The Festi Patate, initiated by Pierre Desinor, Vyles Nazaire, and Vyles Johnny, celebrated its successful sixth edition on February 6, 2016, in Montagne La Voûte, Jacmel. The festival promotes potato cultivation and features products like potato-based crémasse, bread, fries, smoked, boiled, milk-based, gratin, liqueur, and juice. It aims to encourage agriculture, boost the economy, and foster social cohesion. The organizers are planning to introduce a new potato-based product at the next edition, with broader ambitions to contribute to Haiti's agricultural promotion and poverty reduction. The seventh edition is scheduled for February 2023.
